Black Hollywood must do better !!!!
I would first like to address the readers of this post with a bit of who I am . I am a 40 year old black man who has grown up in love with films and I think that Black Hollywood and other Black Filmmakers and Producers really need to unite and work together to produce more great American black stories .
I was raised on Spike Lee and honestly think the brotha is the greatest Black American filmmaker of all time . I mean I often argue to people that Malcolm X is the greatest film ever made . And in saying so I recently watched the Netflix docu series You Gotta Have Is and learned about the story of how the film Malcolm X was made and how many prominent black folk helped the movie get made financially. That was in 1992 and I though “damn why cannot these same Black people work together to tell more Great Black stories through the power of film .
As soon , as I made that statement, I decided to watch The Harder They Fall on Netflix and was a cinematic masterpiece. The director Jeymus Samuel wrote the screenplay with Boaz Yakin captured magic and along with the acting of so many great black actors and actresses the movie is an instant classic . The fact they created a story based on the lives of real life Black Cowboys being either lawmen or outlaws was phenomenal, and an example of what it takes for Black Hollywood doing better .
So when I write this I hope in the future Tyler Perry , Spike Lee, The Hughes Brothers ,Ava DuVernay, Ryan Coolger, and others can unite and keep the momentum going . We love The Black Panther . We love Do the Right Thing, We love Selma . We love Menace to Society . And the numbers let folks know how much we love those fucking Medea movies . So I hope through the love of film these strong black folks can work together and keep making films that we snd the ones before and after us will love as well
